The Story Behind It

The Tale of Bubble and Squeak

Story updated

Bubble and Squeak, leftover boiled potatoes and cabbage fried together, takes its playful name from the sounds the mixture makes sizzling in the pan. It's been documented in English cooking since at least the 18th century as a practical way to use up Sunday roast leftovers.

  • 2 cups leftover cooked cabbage or Brussels sprouts, chopped
