The Tale of Wali wa Nazi (Tanzanian Coconut Rice)
Story updated
Wali wa nazi, rice cooked in coconut milk, reflects Zanzibar's long history as an Indian Ocean trading post ruled successively by Persians, Omanis, and Portuguese, each leaving a mark—rice and spices from Arab traders, and a reliance on the island's abundant coconut palms. It's a coastal Swahili staple across Tanzania's Indian Ocean communities.
