The Story Behind It

The Tale of Sosaties (South African Spiced Meat Skewers)

Story updated

Sosaties, skewered and marinated meat (traditionally lamb), are a Cape Malay dish, their name blending the Malay words for skewered meat and spicy sauce, reflecting the Indonesian slaves brought to the Cape by the Dutch in the mid-1600s. The marinade's mix of turmeric, spices, and South African apricot jam and vinegar shows this Indonesian-Dutch fusion at work.

Ingredients

Scale:· 6 servings
  • 2 lb lamb shoulder, cubed
  • 2 onions, cut into chunks
  • 1/2 cup dried apricots
  • 1/4 cup curry powder
  • 2 tbsp apricot jam
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Wooden or metal skewers

Instructions

  1. 1Whisk curry powder, apricot jam, garlic, vinegar, and water together to make a marinade.
  2. 2Combine the lamb cubes with the marinade in a bowl or bag and refrigerate at least 4 hours, ideally overnight.
  3. 3Thread the marinated lamb onto skewers, alternating with onion chunks and dried apricots.
  4. 4Reserve the leftover marinade for basting.
  5. 5Grill the skewers over medium-hot coals, turning and basting frequently, for 10-12 minutes until cooked through and lightly charred.
  6. 6Serve hot with yellow rice or bread.
