The Story Behind It

The Tale of Bobotie (South African Spiced Beef Bake)

Story updated

Bobotie, a spiced, curried mince bake topped with an egg custard, traces back to the Cape Malay community—descendants of Javanese and other Southeast Asian people enslaved by the Dutch East India Company and brought to the Cape in the 17th century. Adapting to ingredients available there, these cooks blended Indonesian spicing with European technique, and bobotie is now widely considered South Africa's national dish.
