The Tale of Zemiakové Placky
These potato pancakes are rooted in Central European peasant cooking, gaining popularity after the potato became a staple crop across the Habsburg lands from the 18th century onward. They remain a simple, everyday comfort food in Slovak households.
Ingredients
Scale:· 4 servings
- 1 kg potatoes, peeled and grated
- 2 eggs
- 3 tablespoons flour
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon marjoram
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Oil for frying
Instructions
- 1Squeeze excess liquid from the grated potatoes.
- 2In a bowl, combine the potatoes with eggs, flour, garlic, marjoram, salt, and pepper.
- 3Mix until a thick batter forms.
- 4Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- 5Spoon portions of the batter into the pan, flattening into thin pancakes.
- 6Fry until golden and crisp on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side.
- 7Drain on paper towels.
- 8Serve hot as a snack or side dish.
