The Tale of Bacon and Egg Pie

Story updated

Bacon and egg pie is a classic New Zealand picnic and potluck dish, its savory, British-derived pastry tradition filled with bacon and whole eggs. Hearty and portable, it's long been a fixture of Kiwi gatherings, from family barbecues to community events, without any single credited creator.

Ingredients

  • 6 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup grated cheese
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 sheets shortcrust pastry

Instructions

  1. 1Preheat oven to 375°F and line a pie dish with one sheet of shortcrust pastry.

  3. 3Whisk the eggs and milk together and pour over the bacon.
  4. 4Sprinkle with cheese and green onions, and season with salt and pepper.
