Ingredients

  • 1 package phyllo dough sheets
  • 2 cups walnuts or pistachios, finely chopped
  • 1 cup butter, melted
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp rose water or orange blossom water
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)

Instructions

  1. 1Combine sugar, water, and lemon juice in a saucepan and simmer until slightly thickened into a syrup, then stir in rose water and set aside to cool completely.
  2. 2Mix the chopped nuts with cinnamon if using.
  3. 3Brush a baking pan with melted butter, then layer about half the phyllo sheets, brushing each sheet generously with butter.
  4. 4Spread the nut mixture evenly over the layered phyllo.
  5. 5Layer the remaining phyllo sheets on top, brushing each with butter as before.
  6. 6Using a sharp knife, cut the unbaked baklava into diamond or square shapes before baking.
  7. 7Bake in a preheated oven at 160°C (325°F) for 40-45 minutes until golden brown and crisp.
  8. 8Immediately pour the cooled sugar syrup evenly over the hot baklava, then let it cool and absorb the syrup fully before serving.
