Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (7g) active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 1/4 cups warm milk or water
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • Oil for deep frying

Instructions

  1. 1Dissolve yeast and sugar in warm milk or water and let sit until foamy.
  2. 2Combine flour and salt, then mix in the yeast mixture and melted butter to form a soft dough.
  3. 3Knead until smooth, then cover and let rise in a warm place for about 45-60 minutes until doubled.
  4. 4Roll the risen dough out to about 1.5cm thickness and cut into small squares or diamonds.
  5. 5Heat oil in a deep pot to medium heat.
  6. 6Fry the pieces in batches, turning occasionally, until puffed and golden brown on all sides.
  7. 7Drain on paper towels.
  8. 8Serve warm, traditionally alongside tea, jam, or honey.
