The Tale of Pizza Margherita
Story updated
Pizza Margherita is popularly credited to Naples pizzaiolo Raffaele Esposito, who in 1889 is said to have made a pizza topped with tomato, mozzarella, and basil, echoing the colors of the Italian flag, in honor of Queen Margherita of Savoy. Some historians consider parts of the story embellished, but it remains the most repeated origin tale in pizza history.
