The Story Behind It

The Tale of Plato Típico

Story updated

Plato típico isn't a single fixed recipe but a general term for Honduras' "typical plate," combining grilled meat, beans, plantain, cheese, and tortillas. It represents the everyday combination found in Honduran home cooking rather than any one restaurant's or region's specific invention.

Ingredients

Scale:· 4 servings
  • 1 lb carne asada (grilled beef)
  • 1 cup refried beans
  • 1 cup white rice, cooked
  • 1 plantain, sliced and fried
  • 4 oz queso fresco, sliced
  • 1/2 cup crema
  • 1 cup shredded cabbage curtido
  • Chismol (tomato-onion relish), for serving

Instructions

  1. 1Season and grill the beef until cooked to preference, then slice thinly.
  2. 2Fry the plantain slices in oil until golden on both sides.
  3. 3Warm the refried beans and rice separately.
  4. 4Arrange the beef, beans, rice, and plantains together on a plate.
  5. 5Add queso fresco slices and a drizzle of crema.
  6. 6Serve with shredded cabbage curtido and chismol on the side.
