The Story Behind It

The Tale of Sishwala neSidvudvu (Swazi Porridge with Pumpkin)

Story updated

Sishwala, a stiff maize porridge, is the everyday staple of the Swazi table, paired here with sidvudvu, a sweet pumpkin relish often thickened with a bit of cornmeal. The combination reflects the broader Southern African tradition of stiff porridges served alongside vegetable relishes, adapted in Eswatini to make use of locally grown pumpkins.
