The Tale of Sidvudvu

Sidvudvu is a traditional Swazi pumpkin dish, typically pumpkin mashed or cooked together with mealie-meal (cornmeal), reflecting the reliance on pumpkin and maize as dietary staples across rural Eswatini. It's a simple, homestyle comfort food, often eaten as a side or light meal.

Ingredients

Scale:· 6 servings
  • 4 cups pumpkin, peeled and cubed
  • 1.5 cups maize meal
  • 3 cups water
  • Salt, to taste
  • 1 tbsp sugar, optional
  • 1 tbsp butter, optional
  • Pinch of ground nutmeg, optional

Instructions

  1. 1Boil the pumpkin cubes in water until very soft, about 15 minutes.
  2. 2Mash the pumpkin roughly in its cooking liquid.
  3. 3Gradually stir in the maize meal, whisking to prevent lumps.
  4. 4Cook over low heat, stirring frequently, 15-20 minutes until thick and well combined.
  5. 5Season with salt, and a little sugar if desired.
  6. 6Serve warm as a side or light meal.
