The Tale of Yaniqueques
Story updated
Yaniqueques, crispy fried flatbreads, get their curious name from "Johnny cakes," reportedly introduced to the Dominican Republic's south coast by English-speaking sailors and immigrants in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Sold by beachside vendors, especially around Boca Chica, they remain a favorite salty snack.
