The Story Behind It

The Tale of Vegemite on Toast

Story updated

Vegemite was created in 1922 by Australian food scientist Cyril Callister for the Fred Walker Company, who was looking for a use for leftover brewer's yeast. The salty, savory spread became a fiercely loved national icon, and Vegemite on toast remains an everyday Australian breakfast staple.

Ingredients

Scale:· 1 serving
  • 2 slices white or wholemeal bread
  • 1 tbsp butter, softened
  • 1-2 tsp Vegemite

Instructions

  1. 1Toast the bread slices until golden and crisp.
  2. 2Spread a generous layer of butter over each slice while still warm.
  3. 3Add a thin, even layer of Vegemite over the butter — a little goes a long way.
  4. 4Serve immediately while the toast is hot.
