The Story Behind It

The Tale of Alfajores de Dulce de Leche

Story updated

Alfajores trace back to Moorish sweets carried to Spain and then to South America by colonists; the name itself comes from Arabic, meaning stuffed or filled. Argentina made the pastry its own in the 19th century by filling it with dulce de leche, turning it into one of the country's most iconic treats.
