Petulla (Albanian Fried Dough)

Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- Vegetable oil for frying
- Powdered sugar or feta cheese for serving
Instructions
- 1Dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water and let sit until foamy, about 10 minutes.
- 2Mix the flour and salt in a large bowl, then pour in the yeast mixture and stir into a sticky, loose dough.
- 3Cover and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour until doubled.
- 4Heat oil in a deep pot to 350°F.
- 5Scoop portions of dough with a wet hand or spoon and gently stretch and drop them into the hot oil.
- 6Fry until golden and puffed, turning once, about 3 to 4 minutes total.
- 7Drain on paper towels.
- 8Serve dusted with powdered sugar, or savory with crumbled feta cheese on top.
