French Onion Soup

Ingredients

  • 4 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 tbsp butter, melted
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 6 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 6 slices French bread, toasted
  • 1.5 cups shredded Gruyere or Swiss cheese

Instructions

  1. 1Place the sliced onions in the slow cooker and toss them with the melted butter and garlic.
  2. 2Cover and cook on low for 8 hours, or until the onions are deeply softened and golden, stirring once or twice if you can.
  3. 3Pour in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper, then cover and cook on low for an additional 1 hour to blend the flavors.
  4. 4Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls, top each with a slice of toasted bread and a generous handful of cheese.
  5. 5Broil the bowls in the oven for 2 to 3 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly, then serve immediately.
