Ingredients

  • 3 lbs russet potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 4 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg

Instructions

  1. 1Preheat the oven to 375 F and grease a large baking dish.
  2. 2Melt the butter in a saucepan, whisk in the flour, and cook for 1 minute, then gradually whisk in the milk until smooth.
  3. 3Add the garlic, salt, pepper, and nutmeg, and simmer for 4-5 minutes, until thickened, then stir in half the cheese.
  4. 4Layer the sliced potatoes in the baking dish, pouring the cheese sauce evenly between layers.
  5. 5Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes, then uncover, top with remaining cheese, and bake 15-20 more minutes, until the potatoes are fork-tender and the top is golden.
  6. 6Let rest for 10 minutes before serving so the sauce can set slightly.
