The Story Behind It

The Tale of Sheet-Pan Italian Sausage and Peppers

Story updated

Sausage and peppers is a classic Italian-American dish, especially tied to street food at festivals like New York's Feast of San Gennaro, dating back to early 20th-century immigrant communities. The sheet-pan version modernizes the stovetop original.

Ingredients

Scale:· 4 servings
  • 1.5 lbs Italian sausage links
  • 3 bell peppers, sliced
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 4 hoagie rolls (optional)

Instructions

  1. 1Preheat the oven to 400°F and line a large sheet pan with foil.
  2. 2Arrange the sausage links on one side of the sheet pan.
  3. 3Toss the peppers and onion with olive oil, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and pepper, then spread them over the rest of the same pan.
  4. 4Roast for 25 to 30 minutes, turning the sausages and stirring the vegetables halfway through, until the sausages are browned and cooked through and the peppers are soft.
  5. 5Slice the sausages if desired and toss them with the peppers and onions right on the pan to combine the juices.
  6. 6Serve as is, or pile onto hoagie rolls for sausage and pepper sandwiches.
