Ingredients

  • 1 lb Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 2 bell peppers, sliced
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 8 oz penne pasta, uncooked
  • 3 cups chicken broth
  • 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan
  • Chopped basil for garnish

Instructions

  1. 1In a large deep skillet over medium-high heat, brown the sausage, breaking it into crumbles, for 5 to 6 minutes.
  2. 2Add the peppers and onion to the same skillet and cook for 4 to 5 minutes until softened, then stir in the garlic for 30 seconds more.
  3. 3Add the uncooked pasta, chicken broth, crushed tomatoes, Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes directly to the skillet, stirring to combine.
  4. 4Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 15 to 18 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is tender and the liquid has thickened into a sauce.
  5. 5Stir in the Parmesan cheese until melted and creamy.
  6. 6Top with fresh basil and serve directly from the skillet.
