The Tale of Egg, Sausage and Cheese Breakfast Sandwich
Story updated
The breakfast sandwich as a fast-food category owes much to McDonald's Egg McMuffin, created in 1972 by franchisee Herb Peterson, who wanted to bring the flavors of eggs Benedict to a handheld, on-the-go format. It sparked a wave of imitators across the fast-food industry.
Ingredients
Scale:· 2 servings
- 2 English muffins or bagels, split
- 2 breakfast sausage patties
- 2 large eggs
- 2 slices American cheese
- 1 tbsp butter
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- 1Cook the sausage patties in a skillet over medium heat for about 4 to 5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through, then set aside.
- 2In the same skillet, melt a little butter and crack in the eggs, breaking the yolks if you prefer them well done, and season with salt and pepper.
- 3Cook the eggs for 2 to 3 minutes, flipping once, until set to your liking.
- 4Toast the split English muffins until golden.
- 5Assemble each sandwich with a sausage patty, a fried egg, and a slice of cheese between the muffin halves, letting the residual heat melt the cheese.
- 6Serve immediately while warm.
