The Tale of Club Sandwich
Story updated
The club sandwich is often traced to the Saratoga Club House, a gambling house and restaurant in Saratoga Springs, New York, in the 1890s, where the double-decker format is said to have first appeared. It became a fixture of American hotel and diner menus soon after.
Ingredients
Scale:· 2 servings
- 6 slices bread, toasted
- 4 tbsp mayonnaise
- 4 slices bacon, cooked crisp
- 4 oz sliced deli turkey
- 2 slices cheddar or Swiss cheese
- 4 leaves lettuce
- 1 tomato, sliced
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- 1Toast all the bread slices until golden and let them cool slightly so the mayonnaise doesn't melt into them.
- 2Spread mayonnaise on one side of each slice of toast.
- 3On the first slice, layer turkey, cheese, and a leaf of lettuce, then top with a second slice of toast, mayonnaise-side up.
- 4Add bacon, tomato slices, and the remaining lettuce on top of the second slice, seasoning with salt and pepper.
- 5Top with the third slice of toast, mayonnaise-side down, then secure with toothpicks and cut into quarters diagonally.
