The Tale of Classic Grilled Cheese
Story updated
Grilled cheese rose to popularity in the US during the 1920s-30s, once affordable sliced bread and inexpensive processed cheese made it an easy, budget-friendly meal during the Great Depression. Its simplicity and comfort-food appeal have kept it a household staple ever since.
Ingredients
Scale:· 1 serving
- 2 slices sandwich bread
- 2 tbsp butter, softened
- 2 slices cheddar cheese
- 1 slice American cheese, optional for extra meltiness
Instructions
- 1Spread a thin, even layer of softened butter on one side of each slice of bread.
- 2Place one slice of bread butter-side down in a cold skillet set over medium-low heat.
- 3Layer the cheese slices on top of the bread in the skillet, then top with the second slice of bread, butter-side up.
- 4Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, checking occasionally so the bread doesn't burn, until the bottom is deep golden brown.
- 5Flip the sandwich carefully with a spatula and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes until the second side is golden and the cheese is fully melted.
- 6Remove from the skillet, let rest for a minute, then slice in half and serve warm.
