The Story Behind It

The Tale of BLT (Bacon, Lettuce & Tomato)

Story updated

The BLT likely evolved from earlier club sandwich and tea sandwich traditions in the US, becoming widely popular by the mid-20th century as sliced bread, bacon, and mayonnaise all became household staples. Its exact origin isn't well documented, but its popularity is undisputed.

Ingredients

Scale:· 2 servings
  • 6 slices bacon
  • 4 slices white or wheat bread, toasted
  • 4 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 4 leaves crisp lettuce
  • 1 large tomato, sliced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. 1Cook the bacon in a skillet over medium heat, turning occasionally, until crisp and browned, about 8 to 10 minutes, then drain on paper towels.
  2. 2Toast the bread slices until golden and firm enough to hold the filling.
  3. 3Spread mayonnaise evenly over one side of each slice of toast.
  4. 4Layer lettuce, tomato slices, and bacon on two of the slices, seasoning the tomato lightly with salt and pepper.
  5. 5Top each with the remaining slices of toast, mayonnaise-side down, then press gently and slice in half to serve.
