The Story Behind It

The Tale of Garden Salad

Story updated

Tossed green salads have ancient roots, with the Romans dressing raw vegetables in oil, vinegar, and salt (the word 'salad' itself comes from the Latin for salted). The garden salad as known today is more a general category than a single dish with a defined origin.

Ingredients

Scale:· 4 servings
  • 6 cups mixed lettuce or spring greens
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1 cucumber, sliced
  • 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 carrot, shredded
  • 1/2 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. 1Wash and dry the lettuce well, then place it in a large salad bowl.
  2. 2Add the cherry tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, carrot, and bell pepper on top.
  3. 3In a small jar or bowl, whisk together the olive oil, vinegar, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper until combined.
  4. 4Drizzle the dressing over the vegetables just before serving.
  5. 5Toss gently to coat everything evenly and serve immediately.
