The Story Behind It

The Tale of Asian Sesame Salad

Story updated

Sesame-dressed salads draw on East Asian flavors like sesame oil and soy, but this style of salad is largely an American restaurant creation from the late 20th century rather than a dish found traditionally in any single Asian country.

Ingredients

Scale:· 4 servings
  • 5 cups shredded napa cabbage or romaine
  • 1 cup shredded carrots
  • 1/2 cup edamame, shelled
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup sliced almonds, toasted
  • 3 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. 1Combine the shredded cabbage, carrots, edamame, and green onions in a large bowl.
  2. 2In a small bowl, whisk together the sesame oil, rice vinegar, soy sauce, and honey until well blended.
