The Tale of Italian Sausage Pasta Skillet
Story updated
Italian sausage reflects centuries of regional Italian charcuterie traditions, and combining it with pasta in a skillet is a typical Italian-American home-cooking shortcut, developed as immigrant families adapted old-world ingredients to quick weeknight American meals.
Ingredients
Scale:· 4 servings
- 1 lb Italian pork sausage, casings removed
- 2 cups penne pasta
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 small onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 1 cup chicken broth
- 1/2 tsp dried basil
- 1/2 tsp dried oregano
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- 1Heat the olive oil in a large deep skillet over medium heat and crumble in the sausage, breaking it into small pieces as it cooks.
- 2Cook for 6 to 7 minutes until the sausage is browned, then add the onion and garlic and cook for 2 to 3 minutes until softened.
- 3Stir in the crushed tomatoes, chicken broth, basil, and oregano, then add the uncooked pasta directly into the skillet.
- 4Bring to a simmer, cover, and cook for 12 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed.
- 5Stir in the heavy cream and Parmesan cheese, letting the sauce thicken for 2 minutes over low heat.
- 6Season with salt and pepper to taste before serving warm.
