The Story Behind It

The Tale of Bacon-Wrapped Asparagus

Story updated

This is a modern American appetizer rather than a dish with deep historical roots; bacon-wrapping vegetables became a popular party and steakhouse trend in the latter half of the 20th century as a simple way to add richness and crisp texture.

Ingredients

Scale:· 4 servings
  • 16 asparagus spears, trimmed
  • 8 slices bacon, halved lengthwise
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar, optional

Instructions

  1. 1Preheat the oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with foil.
  2. 2Toss the asparagus spears with olive oil, garlic powder, and black pepper.
  3. 3Bundle 2 asparagus spears together and wrap tightly with a half-strip of bacon, securing the ends underneath.
  4. 4Arrange the bundles on the baking sheet and sprinkle with brown sugar if using.
  5. 5Bake for 18 to 20 minutes, until the bacon is crisp and the asparagus is tender.
  6. 6Let the bundles cool for a couple of minutes on the pan before serving.
