The Tale of S'mores Pie
Story updated

'mores pie is a modern spin on one of American camping culture's most enduring treats. The toasted-marshmallow, chocolate, and graham cracker combination was first written down in 1927 in the Girl Scouts' handbook Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts, under the name Some More, a recipe attributed to troop leader Loretta Scott Crew, though newspaper accounts show troops making it as early as 1925. The shortened name s'mores began appearing by the 1940s and was formally recognized by Merriam-Webster only in 1974. Turning the campfire snack into a pie is a much later, undocumented development, part of the broader trend of reinventing nostalgic candy and snack flavors as bakery desserts that took off in American food culture in the 2000s and 2010s. The pie format layers a graham cracker crust with chocolate ganache or pudding and a torched marshmallow or meringue topping, translating the eat-it-with-your-hands campfire original into a sliceable dessert while keeping its three signature components intact.
