Ingredients
- 1 lb ziti
- 1 lb Italian sausage, casings removed
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 24 oz marinara sauce
- 15 oz ricotta cheese
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese, plus more for topping
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
- 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more for pasta water
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil or parsley
Instructions
- 1Preheat the oven to 375 F and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
- 2Cook the ziti in salted boiling water until very al dente, about 2 minutes less than the package suggests, since it will continue cooking in the oven, then drain.
- 3In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the sausage and onion together, breaking up the sausage with a spoon, about 6 to 8 minutes, then add the garlic and cook 1 minute more.
- 4Stir in the marinara sauce and simmer for 5 minutes, then season with salt and pepper.
- 5In a bowl, mix the ricotta, egg, Parmesan, and 1 cup of the mozzarella until combined.
- 6Toss the drained ziti with the meat sauce and the ricotta mixture, then spread into the prepared baking dish and top with the remaining mozzarella.
- 7Bake uncovered for 20 to 25 minutes until bubbly and golden on top, then let rest 5 minutes and garnish with basil or parsley before serving.
