Ingredients

  • 1 lb ziti
  • 1 lb Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 24 oz marinara sauce
  • 15 oz ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese, plus more for topping
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more for pasta water
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil or parsley

Instructions

  1. 1Preheat the oven to 375 F and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. 2Cook the ziti in salted boiling water until very al dente, about 2 minutes less than the package suggests, since it will continue cooking in the oven, then drain.
  3. 3In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the sausage and onion together, breaking up the sausage with a spoon, about 6 to 8 minutes, then add the garlic and cook 1 minute more.
  4. 4Stir in the marinara sauce and simmer for 5 minutes, then season with salt and pepper.
  5. 5In a bowl, mix the ricotta, egg, Parmesan, and 1 cup of the mozzarella until combined.
  6. 6Toss the drained ziti with the meat sauce and the ricotta mixture, then spread into the prepared baking dish and top with the remaining mozzarella.
  7. 7Bake uncovered for 20 to 25 minutes until bubbly and golden on top, then let rest 5 minutes and garnish with basil or parsley before serving.
