Ingredients

  • 6 cups cubed day-old bread
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. 1Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a 9x9-inch baking dish.
  2. 2Spread the cubed bread evenly in the prepared dish and scatter the raisins over top if using.
  3. 3Whisk together the milk, cream, eggs, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  4. 4Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread, pressing down gently so the cubes soak it up.
  5. 5Let the dish sit for 10 minutes so the bread can absorb the liquid, then drizzle with the melted butter.
  6. 6Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, until puffed, golden, and set in the center.
  7. 7Let cool for 10 minutes before serving warm.
