The Story Behind It

The Tale of Blondies

Story updated

Blondies developed as a vanilla-based counterpart to the chocolate brownie, with recipes for similar butterscotch bar cookies appearing in American cookbooks as early as the late 19th century, by some accounts predating brownies. They became a distinct, popular treat in their own right through the 20th century.
