The Story Behind It

The Tale of Classic Overnight Oats

Story updated

Overnight oats trace to Swiss bircher muesli, created around 1900 by physician Maximilian Bircher-Benner, who soaked oats with fruit and nuts overnight for patients at his Zurich clinic. The no-cook, make-ahead format was rediscovered and popularized by health and meal-prep bloggers in the early 2010s.

Ingredients

Scale:· 1 serving
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup milk of choice
  • 1/4 cup yogurt
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • Fresh fruit and nuts, for topping

Instructions

  1. 1Combine the oats, milk, yogurt, chia seeds, honey, and vanilla in a jar or container and stir well.
  2. 2Cover and refrigerate overnight, or for at least 4 hours, so the oats and chia seeds absorb the liquid and soften.
  3. 3In the morning, give the oats a good stir, loosening with a splash more milk if the mixture is too thick.
  4. 4Top with fresh fruit and nuts just before eating, either cold or warmed briefly if you prefer.
