The Story Behind It

The Tale of Classic Banana Bread

Story updated

Banana bread became popular in the U.S. in the 1930s, aided by the spread of baking soda and baking powder in home recipe booklets, and by Depression-era thrift that discouraged wasting overripe bananas.

Ingredients

Scale:· 10 servings
  • 3 very ripe bananas, mashed
  • 1/3 cup melted butter
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. 1Preheat oven to 350°F and grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan.
  2. 2Mix mashed bananas with melted butter in a large bowl.
  3. 3Stir in sugar, egg, and vanilla.
  4. 4Sprinkle baking soda and salt over the mixture and stir in.
  5. 5Fold in the flour just until no dry streaks remain.
  6. 6Pour into the pan and bake 55-60 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. 7Cool in the pan 10 minutes, then turn out onto a rack.
