The Story Behind It

The Tale of Beer Bread

Story updated

Beer bread is a simple quick bread leavened partly by the carbonation in beer; its exact origin is unclear, but it became a popular home-baking shortcut in America, especially once self-rising flour and canned beer made it easily accessible.

Ingredients

Scale:· 8 servings
  • 3 cups self-rising flour
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1 (12 oz) bottle beer, room temperature
  • 3 tbsp melted butter

Instructions

  1. 1Preheat oven to 375°F and grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan.
  2. 2Whisk together flour and sugar.
  3. 3Stir in the beer just until combined — the batter will be thick and lumpy.
  4. 4Spread into the pan and drizzle melted butter over the top.
  5. 5Bake 45-50 minutes, until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
