Ingredients
- 1.5 lbs ground beef (80/20)
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 4 slices cheddar cheese
- 4 hamburger buns
- 2 tbsp butter, softened
- Lettuce, sliced tomato, and sliced onion for serving
- Ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise for serving
Instructions
- 1Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and gently shape into patties slightly wider than the buns, pressing a shallow dimple in the center of each.
- 2Season both sides generously with salt and pepper.
- 3Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat until very hot.
- 4Cook the patties for 3-4 minutes per side for medium doneness, flipping only once, until a deep sear forms.
- 5In the last minute of cooking, top each patty with a slice of cheddar and cover briefly to melt.
- 6Butter the buns and toast cut-side down in a separate pan or on the griddle until golden.
- 7Assemble the burgers with lettuce, tomato, onion, and condiments of choice.
